
Really, all I am is a fantasy author. That’s what I do, that’s what I love.
So why am I weighing in on a political issue?
Because every once in a while, something gets under my skin, thumps the anger node in my brain and breaks me out of my pleasant dream world and right now I’m talking to you, the dumb ass college graduates of my generation. Put down that hacky sack, pull the peace sign out of your ass, and listen up! Hopefully, when I’m done, you’ll pack up your tents and get back to your parent’s basement so I can return to my self-induced seclusion and get some real writing done.
For the record, I wouldn’t call myself very political. Remember, I write fantasy books, but first, I’ll say the biggest thing I hate about our government is the party system. I feel what the party system does best is split America into groups instead of bringing it together. Best of all, these groups HATE each other in the same way Sox fans hate Yankees fans and in turn, nothing gets done but shitslinging over pride and under the table deals to keep their jobs. Yes, to be a politician is a job. One day little Johnny or little Jane wakes up and is all like, “Hey Mom! I want to live life with my head up my own ass!” and just like that, democracy was born.
To be a politician is a choice, the choice to want power. To quote Lord Voldemort,
“There is only power and those too weak to seek it,”
Of course, I don’t think all politicians are evil. I am rather happy with Governor John Lynch, my current governor in NH. The man is a class act and just an all around smart, nice guy who supports the troops, keeps the budget low, and generally cares about the people he governs. These are qualities I rarely find in a politician and I feel he is one of the reasons why the state of NH has not been hit hard by the economy. We keep it simple here in NH, Live free or die. Unlike our neighboring state of Massachusetts, we don’t need the government to hold our hand or tax our asses off.
So what am I you ask? Republican or Democrat? The answer is neither. I consider myself an independent thinker, as should you! Are you a sheep or a human being? Sheep follow party systems and trends and deep down that’s not you. You are an individual thinker with an individual brain so act like one!
As I discuss in my novel Renegade Rising, I hate extremes. Conservatives and liberals alike are two extremes that fill our parties today and drive them forward. However, my hate has levels and I do not hate everyone equally. The best thing to sum up my feelings is a quote by Matt Stone, co-creator of South Park.
“I hate conservatives, but I really fucking hate liberals.”

That’s the thing with liberal philosophies. They tug at your heartstrings like a Hollywood drama and thrive off raw emotion but usually the brain is rarely present.
America has its problems right now and when problems strike, people want a boogeyman to blame to keep things simple when in fact, our government is full of problems. Right now, the boogeyman is the 1% but taxing them will not fix our problems. And sure, most of the 1% are assholes that took bailout money and went out the next weekend to get massages and a tug job on our buck. However, you must remember that not all of the big businesses out there took bailouts and the 1%, like it or not, are what provide us 99% most of our jobs and we, the 99%, gave the big corporations their power. Remember, every big corporation was once a small business. Wal-Mart didn’t just pop up overnight. We, the consumers made them who they are today. I won’t get started on Wal-Mart and the shady way they do business however. That’s a whole other blog entry in itself.
The 1% is what also puts out Apple iPods and Xbox’s. Both products make me very happy and I want the products to keep on improving! Now, I’m no economist but if I recall anything my micro and macroeconomics courses in college (And it isn’t much) there is no factual formula for running the economy. If there were, the government would be using it. But then again, maybe I’m giving them too much credit.
Now back to the idiot college kids. I can call them idiot college kids because I was in college and in more ways than one, I’m an idiot too. Just look at this rambling blog. If you made it this far, you’re probably wondering what’s the point? Get on with it before you waste my life further! Ok, ok, here we go.
I’m not against protesting mind you. Change can come from it, but it needs to be unionized, practical, and oh yeah, possible. We’ve all seen these kids across America sleeping in tents and making their voices heard on the news, but the question I want to know is, what voice? Is it corporate greed? If so, march on down to Microsoft and other big name companies, give ‘em hell and boycott their products! I’m right behind ya! Is it the economy? If so, march your asses down to Washington and give our buddy Barrack a piece of your mind. I’ll be right with you! No? Then what is it? If you don’t know then don’t clog downtown Manchester, NH and get in the way of my work commute for no apparent reason other than just to show off your died hair, rapist mustache, and hold up a cardboard sign saying you want change. STATE the change you want for the love of Christ!
Now, for those with a message preaching about the 1% needing to get taxed more, Ok then, now I understand, but I also have an issue. So let me get this straight, you think that by taxing the 1% of our population an extra 3% will solve all the problems of the 99%? I’m no math major but something doesn’t add up bro. Oh I forgot! Stupid me, LOVE needs to be involved in this formula too because all you need is LOVE! LOVE fixes everything! LOVE! LOVE! HIPPY DIPPY LOVE! That’s this guys opinion anyway,

But that guy’s nothing. So far during this whole cluster fuck, my favorite sign is one that read, “A Job is a Right!”. Oh really James Madison? I’d love to hear you explain that one to me. I’m so tired of people who believe they are entitled to everything like spoiled children. Just because your parents paid for everything, doesn’t mean the world (Or I) will.
When I was growing up, my parents forced in me the value of a dollar. My whole life has been filled with shitty (Literally) jobs to learn such a lesson. My father was and still is a blue-collar tough as nails business owner who runs his own cleaning company and by runs, I mean he cleans 80% of the buildings himself. From thirteen ‘til eighteen I scrubbed toilets, had tobacco spit cups spilt on me, and vacuumed the square feet of the Great Wall of China ten times over. When I turned eighteen I graduated to dishwasher at a local restaurant, then got the opportunity to clean out spit boxes from wine tastings. But you know what? I’m thankful for it because when I got into college, I appreciated how I got there. And no, my parents didn’t pay a cent. Even as I type this, one of my student loan bills is staring me in the face, laughing at my useless Graphic Design Degree.
My parents taught me that a dollar is not given to you, it is earned or paid back and that dear readers is the problem with my generation. Not all of course, but most. It’s the open hands that bother me. Entitlement is a disease, no, an epidemic and as far as I can tell, there’s not a cure in sight. Welfare is higher than ever, the government hands out more than ever, and we are in debt more than ever. Coincidence that we’re broke? I don’t think so. Sooner or later China’s gonna want their money and I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not have them break America’s legs.
The best part about our money problems is that we keep spending to save. Nice reasoning there. For instance, let me ask you a hypothetical question. If shit is rising in your house do you build the ceiling higher? Or do you open the back door and drain it? Well people, right now the roof is getting higher and higher and it’s not because of the 1%. The problem is the government and but they aren’t all to blame. The biggest blame lies with you and me because we voted these asshats in charge of our hard earned cash!
Blaming somebody else is what politicians do best. Do you really believe that if big businesses were taxed more we would see a cent of it? All taxing the 1% will accomplish is making the government bigger than it already is, which will lead to a bigger problem, and more intrusion into our personal lives. (And they’re doing such a great job with our money already.) For those of you without health insurance, how does it feel being forced to buy something you can’t afford? If you could afford it, wouldn’t you have it already? Of course you would. But what is our government’s bright plan? Lets fine those who don’t have health insurance, make them pay the fine and then on top of that, force them to get health insurance and if they don’t, fine the poor bastards again! To quote a Republican (God help me) Ronald Reagan said it best,
“As the government expands, liberty declines.”
So decide right now. Would you rather a fish for every citizen of America? Or a fishing pole? Because right now if the government does tax the 1% (The Job Makers) they are going to get all the fish and start taking away the fishing poles. Remember, the moment you are dependent on the government for your life is the very same moment they own you. Do you really want the government to hold your hand and treat you like a child? Or do you want to stand on your own two feet, control your own fate, and be the independent man or woman you were meant to be? Isn’t freedom of choice wonderful?

Love this article very well stated opinion. One thing I want you to follow up with. You state, and I can understand it, that extremism is not a good thing. You might even spread some hate that way. I actually can understand. BUT… what about moderation? I think the word I keep hearing is COMPROMISE.
That is an interesting term applied to a political stance. Lets look at it in a couple of other lights.
1) Sir the ships hull is compromised and we are sinking. Not a good thing, eeh?
2) Sir our plans to invade Cuba have been compromised we should call it off or all of our troops may be killed.
3)My fence in my backyard was compromised by a tree limb and my pit bull got out and ate the neighbors cat.
I am starting to think compromise is a nasty thing to try and achieve on a grand scale. Perhaps a staunch unwavering support of your own convictions is not such a bad thing. The problem is that is in these times considered to be extreme.
So where do we go from here. Compromise until we are Europe or Russia? Or do we stand strong in our beliefs and keep our convictions holstered with our 2nd amendment and fight the tyranny that is accompanied with compromise.

Some people you just can’t reach as the saying goes. And that’s just the thing. When somebody offers their say on a topic, what do people usually end it with? It’s always followed up with, “But that’s just my opinion.” Nobody has the right answers and everybody has different views and opinions! Some people share in those opinions, others don’t, but I feel as long as we are open minded enough to admit that we really don’t have all the answers, it’s a great chance for middle ground. However, to do so, you got to let down your pride but sometimes, you shouldn’t do that at all
It’s a viscous cycle man, one philosophers have been tackling since the beginning of time. It won’t come over night, probably not ever but that’s ok because it is only through opposition and trials do we discover the best parts of ourselves

Bravo!! Took the words right out of my mouth, especially the entitlement part. My state has been hit particular hard by the failing economy, and I’ve always believed it’s because of the handouts. My state gives driver’s licences to people who enter the US illegally (and dangerously, I might add.) Not to mention the welfare, child care, and unemployment just given out like it’s candy.
For 2 years, I was a single mom. I worked a full time job and paid full price for daycare for my daughter. I also paid for health insurance for both her and I. My apartment wasn’t the prettiest, my furniture was my mom’s old furniture. I didn’t have a TV, or cable, or a fancy new car. But we always had food and clothes and basic needs and it was all stuff I had on my on. It makes me mad when I hear people complain about how they can”t afford to go to the dr or pay health insurance, but they can pay for their smoking habit, and NFL premium package on their 60inch high def TV on their leather couches. Priorities have shifted from necessities to wants. The economic problem is our fault. not the 1%. I am thankful for the 1% for giving me my job with great benefits and for giving me the opportunity to care for my family.
I think these “Occupy” protests are all for entitlement. “let’s see how far we can push for free stuff” little do they know, the government doesn’t even think twice about them and the 1% is laughing at them. It’s unfortunate that other people our age didn’t get the chance to learn the value of a dollar, of life, of anything like we did. Once people learn about hard work, things aren’t going to change. it’s only going to get worse.

There is a real, theoretical strategy designed to impose massive state dependence/control on a populace, it’s known as the Cloward/Piven strategy. What we are seeing would be a natural step of its active implementation.
Comparing the left & right of our political spectrum to competing ball clubs is tempting, but the fundamental flaw is their goals. When one ball team wins over another, nothing in your life changes. However, political ideologies have direct impact on important aspects of your personal life.
Political partisanship is fairly meaningless, yes, Democrats are nearly all leftists, however, there are numerous leftists in the Republican party as well. There may well even be a conservative or two in the Democrat party, perhaps Gov Lynch is one of them.
Conservatives tend to value personal responsibility and the freedom to succeed or fail, with little, to preferably no, government interference.
Liberals tend to prefer central planning and are comforted by a powerful government that professes to take care of them.
The problem with that, is the sort of govt that can do so is a govt with the powers of tyranny, helmed by corruptible, imperfect people; people who are attracted to the idea of massive power. This is the antithesis of personal independence and freedom. Seductive, because of a sense of insecurity and fear of the unknown can be played upon by the power hungry.
Conservatives know that power corrupts thus, we prefer a govt with very limited power. If humans were perfect, the leftist model might work, until then its a breeding ground for corruption and graft; tyranny.
The OWS folks are manipulated via the powerful playing on their sense of envy, being young they likely have yet to earn a good living. The promise of taking the wealth from others and giving it to them is very appealing to the fearful, and a purposely collapsed economy helps motivate them to clamour for redistribution with all the more passion.
Which fits perfectly into the Cloward/Piven strategy of moving the population further towards more state control. Coincidence? At this point, the number of coincidences seem too conveniently numerous to discount entirely.
What a well thought out response! I’m floored! And have you ever been in the middle of a Red Sox riot when they lose to the Yanks? It most certainly DOES affect other people’s lives! Flipped cars, burned cars, broken faces, and yeah, you get the idea
And it’s true. Very rare to find somebody that mixes cream with their political coffee. John Lynch is one of those that does his best to let down his pride, find middle ground, and actually gets things done for our state. If only all politicians had his class.

It pains my liberal heart to say this, but you have written an awesome piece that gets straight to the heart of the matter. We in the United States are into the quick, band aid fix of things; not the back breaking, need to sacrifice choices that need to be made. If you live in the United States, have a roof of some sort over your head, nutritious food in your belly, clothing on your body; give thanks! You have more than many of our brothers and sisters who inhabit the rest of our planet. It is time to stop whining with our hand out for whatever we feel is owed us and get down to business. With you in spirit, and I agree with your take. Having had a father who owned a janitorial service, myself, I certainly can understand, commiserate, and recommend traveling similar paths to all out there. Developing a work ethic is paramount to developing character, making life-altering choices that inevitably present themselves, and oddly, enough, developing empathy for others less fortunate.
That being said, I would love to share your piece with colleagues and students, but I cannot do so unless I edit you. Not a censorship fan; and I accept that freedom of speech is a necessary and vital component of America . . . but the price one pays for the vulgarization our discourse is that our doing so severely limits our ability to reach everyone. In your, specific, case, if you remove the adjectives from your piece and read it, does it lose anything? I don’t think so; and Lord knows there are sufficient descriptors in the English language to get your humor and passion across without resorting to the baser ones.
The coarsening of our culture can be tied to the devolution of the language–starting with the spoken and then bleeding into the written and more formal. Degrees in Rhetoric & English give me a bit of a background in the evolution of the English language, and there is no doubt in my mind that its evolving has leveled the playing field between the elites and the hoi polloi to a large degree; but the cost may be more than we realize when it keeps us from sharing material such as yours strictly out of a sense of maintaining decency and probity.
So along with the kudos for the message, a suggestion: Next time, try writing it for a wider audience and see if your message is received as well. Meantime, keep posting.

Seriously now… I don’t know many people who are looking for a handout, but I know plenty of people who are out of work. What I would like to see is the 1% actually live up to their moniker of “job creators.” And I would like to see those jobs created in the United States. I’m tired of hearing excuses about too many “regulations” (union, environmental, etc.) We all know that profits can be maximized by polluting the hell out of the Ganges and paying workers very little indeed. If you’re going to tax the 1% additionally, then tax the 1% who do the latter. Create a disincentive, or call it an incentive instead. We all are indebted to our societies, and severe income disparity isn’t good for the 1%, either.

Good article — bang on in identifying the entitlement mentality that seems to permeate the entire movement (backed up by more than a few communism/socialism supporters, as well as anti-Semites).
That said, I think the #OWS movement is partly right but they’ve failed to identify the correct target to focus their anger on and therefore their solutions are warped. The government’s meddling — the bailouts, the cozy relationship with favored corporations (see GE for example), the bloated and unelected bureaucracy (which has been ongoing for many years) — it’s government intrusion that is the problem. The OWS solution seems to be even more government interference with more regulation — as you’ve said — it’s WRONG.
Author Mark Steyn said it best in his latest book After America: “The opposite of Big Government is not small government, but Big Liberty.” Me, I’m for Big Liberty. I say this as a Canadian who doesn’t enjoy quite the same freedom (close but no cigar) as Americans with your strong Constitution — hang on to your liberty by limiting or shrinking the size of your government. And, IMO, New Hampshire’s state motto is the best!
I agree that they are partly right. As I said in an earlier comment, corporations are just one of the many problems affecting the economy and our general life. However, these wall-street people are all over the place in their statements without one clear voice and most of their voices, at least the loudest ones, come from dumbasses. They are their own worst enemy right now and will eventually defeat themselves. They really don’t even need people like myself to make them look like idiots. They do it all on their own. I have been saying the same thing for years… only not nearly as eloquent.
In my life I have held and let go of many different beliefs & ideas but the one that never changed is “I am ultimately the one responsible for my current situation in life.” Once the economic down turn hit my household I made some changes. I now live BELOW my means and have come to the realization that being content isn’t so bad. I am still striving to be and do better so my family will have a better life. However, I have a better family life now. Certain things have been put back into perspective.
Back to politics… I too have problems with this two party system that pits one side against each other while the Dems and Repubs make more LAWS taking away more of our freedom and money. Our “Public Servants” are neither. That’s why am an independent Libertarian. My use of the word ‘Eloquent’ was meant to be slightly sarcastic. However I did like how you made your points with out a bunch of BS.
As far as getting Independents and/or Libertarians into office, we don’t need one as President right away. We need just a few more as Senators and Representatives each election. I don’t see the two party system being changed over night but we can do it over time.

Mr. Fiske, while I share many of the valid points of your post…I think that the swearing imbedded in the post is not necessary. Most educated people can make a valid point without the use of dirty words.
I agree that the protests are not going to make a lick of difference in the business practices of the fortune 500 companies or get any politician to address it. Most of those politicians need the corporations’ money in order to get re-elected. President Obama had a lunch seminar that one would have to pay $500 a head in order to attend. I mean, really? Where are the 99% on these details…unfortunately most of the 99% make valid points they do not really understand capitalism. The big corporations are the ones who are giving the capital to small businesses….they are the ones that are financing everything and is what makes the world go round. I also agree with your assumption that I am neither republican or democrat…if you had asked me in college I would of told you I am a republican or even a libertarian…but now in my later years I find myself not siding with one party but actually listening to the candidates and making sure they are fiscally conservative and socially liberal. There has to be a balance with everything and if people think that their representative is doing a great job….I would have to disagree…we need people that will work together for the people and not for re-election money.
A little background on me so you know where I am coming from. I grew up in CT, went to school in the only liberal part of New Hampshire (Keene). I volunteered for a year after college in New Orleans, Mississippi and other Katrina affetcted areas. Since then I have worked for a fortune 100 company. My views have a well rounded approach and consider all points of view due to my father being a conservative, my mother a democrat and my wife a democrat. If you have to ask me which party I vote for…it’s all up in the air this year, but I will most likely vote out all of my representatives and vote for Obama – its not his fault and the Tea Party supporters are dumb – they don’t realize that most of the ideology that they are supporting are not even going to help them….it’s very funny to watch them.

This article reminded me of something I read recently. I’m taking night classes to get my MBA right now (AND working…AND making my webcomic LeyLines…yeesh, can I get a 36 hour day?) — and my favorite course at the moment is called “Management of Teams and Individuals”. Part of the course is examining generational differences and the values generally held by each generation. The discussion was correlating corruption to the values of the generation occupying positions of power. When you apply this information to current politics, the results are just as interesting:
Veterans: These are the people that survived WWII, the Depression, and a heck of a lot of hardship. They’re focused on providing for their families, value loyalty, and trust authority. Veterans were known for serving their entire career with one company. They’d make decisions based on what the people above them wanted, or what was best for the company. They trusted their bosses and they trusted their government officials. These people make up our senior citizens.
Baby-boomers: The BBs are out for themselves. Their focus is on the advancement of their own careers. Accomplishment is what drives them, and they do not hold any loyalty to company or country. Their decisions are based on what is best for them, personally, rather than what might be best for their organization. They are willing to make huge personal sacrifices for their careers, and often will work long, exhausting hours to drive themselves ahead. These are the people currently occupying most positions of power in government and companies.
Generation X: Old enough to remember a time when computers and video games were still rudimentary boxes, but young enough that using them is not a challenge. Gen X values relationships, but distrusts authority. They focus on self-reliance and individualism. In other words, they are motivated to benefit those in their personal networks, but do not believe that people in power can be relied on to help them. This may be why people of X and Y generations have clocked more community service hours than any before them…but still tend to avoid joining or participating in large-scale organizations. Gen X will make decisions based on what is best for the relationships they are in. As a result, this generation is more focused on life-work balance, and will often take a less monetarily rewarding job for a more personally satisfying position. These people are the majority of the working work-force, some of which are starting to replace BBs in positions of power.
Generation Y: Gen Y is primarily composed of those that are young enough to take modern technology for granted. Gen Y shares a lot of similarities with Gen X, except that this generation is very focused on the value of money. They want it, know how much it is worth, and are driven to get it. The specifics of how one gets money varies on the individual. Gen Y is also suspicious of authority, and particularly values freedom. They are resistant to organizations that dictate how they spend their time, what their moral values should be, or how they should live their lives. This generation makes up our high-school and college students, and some of the entry-level work-force.

Hey there j. fiske c. I almost read your post blog bullshit thing. I got to the part where you started bullshitting about your jobs. Wait! Wait! Shit!… you missed it that was me careing about your highschool jobs and the relivance of them concerning hippie dippie love fest New York city as you would call it. Now from what i did read i have a few quams. First there has to be a party system with in the government (checks and balances my freind) or you will have one of two extreams total anarchy or full dictator ship you choose (sounds to me like you would like to sit at home and fondle yourself and watch the tellatubies or hairypotter or what ever). Also dont compair a state that has a population that doesnt even make up half the other states largest city (that would be New hampshire and Boston the city in Mass). The econmy in NH prob seems good becuase it sucked in the first place not becuase the governer gave you a free blowjob. The one that bothers me the most is when you quote hairy twater when talking about the government. that will get people to take you seriously. In closeing i would like to point out that this post blogy thing has more coments then any of your books maybe you should write political articals for some hillbillie hunter magizene or something like that.

It saddens me this is going on today. It saddens me that the Blanket of Love our founders laid for the citizens is now at risk. Our Flag, our Country, our Constitution and our Bill of Rights are being attacked from all sides and I pray that we will survive the hard times ahead of us. Overall, I think it is a well-written post.But it remains in denial that the right to assemble and protest is an obligation.More and more free speech is being shunned and even outlawed.We should all be involved in this movement in one way or another.
I can’t deny that I have been face to face with many radical communists and even a few radical libertarians since becoming involved with this movement.And I have been just as discouraged as you and I have written many articles opposing the movement.
But I have come to see that there are all types in this movement and I have accepted my responsibility to remain vigilant against those who would infiltrate and pervert its goals.It is our duty to stay informed and aware of current events.
We must realize that these are people who,for the most part,were born and raised in this country.And we must remember the words written in the Declaration of Independence,”That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
It is for us who wish to remain capitalists to convince the majority of the people that capitalism is best.It is not our right to kill those who oppose it.It is their right,should the majority of the people wish it,to impose communism if they think it best.The founders scribbled their signatures to the Declaration of Independence and gave us the right to institute new form of government should we see fit.
True,it is the Declaration of Independence and not a law,if that is how you choose to see it.But,for some like me,it is the most important document we have and it is a has a higher meaning than law.The declaration was the one document that put the chance of hanging or beheading squarely in the future of the founders, should they lose the war.The declaration,above any law,is what it clearly means to be an American.
